Vanderpump Rules is an American reality television series that premiered on January 7, 2013, on Bravo. Developed as a spin-off of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, it has aired nine seasons and features Lisa Vanderpump and the staff at her restaurants SUR Restaurant & Lounge, Pump Restaurant and Tom Tom Restaurant & Bar in West Hollywood, CA.
The success of the show has resulted in the spin-off Vanderpump Rules: Jax And Brittany Take Kentucky, featuring former cast members Jax Taylor and Brittany Cartwright Cauchi.
Vanderpump Rules follows Lisa Vanderpump’s employees at SUR Restaurant & Lounge, Pump Restaurant and Tom Tom Restaurant & Bar, restaurants in West Hollywood, as they work on building their futures in show business and become entangled in interpersonal drama. The series initially centered on new server Scheana and her relationships with established employees: Stassi, Katie, Kristen, Tom and Jax.
Andy Cohen later announced during the February 4, 2013, Watch What Happens Live! episode that there would be a Vanderpump Rules reunion. The reunion was filmed on February 9, 2013. It was announced in April 2013 that the series had been renewed for a second season. The second season debut was a two-hour crossover episode with the fourth-season premiere of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills on November 4, 2013. The second season reunion was filmed on January 10, 2014. Vanderpump Rules was renewed for a third season in April 2014. The new season premiered on November 3, 2014.
The show was renewed for a fourth season, which premiered on November 2, 2015. The show was later renewed for a fifth season. On September 26, 2016, the trailer and cast were announced, along with the premiere date of November 7, 2016. On January 9, 2017, the tenth episode of the fifth season of Vanderpump Rules titled “Summer House Rules” served as a cross-over preview to Summer House.
On April 11, 2018, Bravo renewed the show for a seventh season, which premiered on December 3, 2018. During the seventh season, Vanderpump partnered with cast members Tom Schwartz and Tom Sandoval to open a new bar in West Hollywood called Tom Tom Restaurant & Bar.
The eighth season premiered on January 7, 2020, with five new cast members joining the show. The season reunion was recorded virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
On June 9, 2020, it was announced original cast members Kristen Doute and Stassi Schroeder Clark were fired, following accusations by former co-worker Faith Stowers, who claimed that the two women filed a false police report against her for a crime she did not commit. Additionally, it was announced Max Boyens and Brett Caprioni would not return for the ninth season following past racist Twitter posts. On December 4, 2020, Jax Taylor and Brittany Cartwright Cauchi confirmed that they also were departing the series.
In December 2020, following the departures of several cast members and due to challenges associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, production on season nine was put on hold ‘indefinitely.’ In April 2021, Dayna Kathan confirmed that she would not be returning for the upcoming ninth season while also suggesting that production on the series was to resume in the near future. On April 27, 2021, Bravo confirmed that Vanderpump Rules would return for a ninth season as well as confirming that Vanderpump, Schwartz, Sandoval, Maloney-Schwartz, Madix, Scheana, Kent, Kennedy and Leviss would all be returning to the show as main cast members. In May 2021, production had begun for Season 9 and is slated to premiere on September 28, 2021.
