Survivor South Africa Season 9 Episode 01 Description
Twice the Game
Twenty returning Survivor South Africa Castaways arrived for redemption in the Sunshine Coast in the Eastern Cape. Nico informed the newly dubbed “Outcasts” that they were playing for R2 Million, the series’ highest prize offer, and were divided into tribes by their previous placements, the maroon Yontau (Pre-Merge castaways) squared off in the first reward challenge of the season against the blue Masu (Post-Merge castaways).
Reward Challenge: In pairs, each tribe must race into the water to retrieve a ring and reach their tribe’s post to score a point. The first tribe to score 3 points wins flint for their camp. Previously played in Island of Secrets.
A victorious Masu celebrated their win, with Chappies and Danté gravitating towards each other due to their past challenge prowess. A majority started to form in the tribe with Marian and Meryl bringing in old allies, Shane and Danté, with Steffi and Chappies, who became friends post seasons, forming the Breakfast Club. While the three Season 6 players, Toni, PK, and Palesa noticed they were being alienated as a potential trio. Toni especially, as her, PK, and Tevin on Yontau all have matching Mindanao tattoos in commemoration of their starting tribe in the Philippines.
Over at Yontau, Tania was tentative of returning to her old ways in Island of Secrets, while Seamus bonded with Dino and Tevin about the impact of being the first boot in the Philippines and how it affected him mentally for years. Tania, however, found herself reaching out to Thoriso, Pinty, and Killarney from the get-go despite her best efforts to dial it back. As soon as the tribe started building shelter, Thoriso started to notice the tribe’s symbol carved into certain trees, hoping it would lead to her finding an idol.
The Outpost: Two Outcasts from each tribe must be sent to the Outpost to negotiate for supplies before given a dilemma. Each tribe can negotiate and select two items each from the Outpost.
Shane and Steffi from Masu arrived at the Outpost and met with Seamus and Thoriso, both tribes receiving the supplies they needed, Shane and Steffi picking a sack of lentils and pap, while Seamus and Thoriso secured a flint and rice for themselves. However, after receiving their items, the four of them were informed that they had to vote for someone besides the four of them to receive the Outpost Idol. The Outpost Idol would be used at the first Tribal Council, and could be assigned to any Outcast, even if their tribe wins the first Immunity Challenge. The votes cast in secret would be revealed at the challenge. If there is a tie, a rock draw for the Idol will take place, with the winner receiving the Idol to use at Tribal Council.

Survivor South Africa Show Summary
Survivor South Africa is a South African reality game show based on the popular international Survivor format.
As in all versions of the show, it features group of strangers who are marooned in an isolated location, where they must provide food, water, fire and shelter for themselves. The contestants will compete in challenges to earn either a reward, or an immunity from elimination. The contestants will be progressively eliminated from the game as they are voted-off by their fellow contestants until only one remains and is given the title “Ultimate Survivor” and be awarded the grand prize of R1 million.
The first five seasons of the show were produced by Endemol and broadcast on M-Net. Since Season 6, the show has been produced by Afrokaans Film & Television.
The first two seasons were hosted by Mark Bayly, and from the third season Nico Panagio took over the hosting duties.
Survivor South Africa Format
The show follows the same general format as the other editions of Survivor. To begin, the players are split into two or three tribes, are taken to a remote isolated location and are forced to live off the land with meagre supplies for a period of several weeks. Frequent physical and mental challenges are used to pit the tribes against each other for rewards, such as food or luxuries, or for immunity, forcing the other tribe to attend Tribal Council, where they must vote one of their tribemates out of the game by secret ballot.
About halfway through the game, the tribes are merged into a single tribe, and challenges are on an individual basis; winning immunity prevents that player from being voted out. Most players that are voted out during this stage become members of the Tribal Council Jury. When only two or three players remain, the Final Tribal Council is held. The finalists plead their case to the Jury as to why they should win the game. The jurors then have the opportunity to interrogate the finalists before casting their vote for which finalist should be awarded the title of “Ultimate Survivor” and wins the grand prize of R1 Million.
Like other editions of the show, the South Africa edition has introduced numerous adaptations, or twists, on the core rules to prevent players from over-relying on strategies that succeeded in prior seasons or other editions of the show. The titular Island of Secrets and the upcoming Immunity Island, and non-playing Captains in Champions, kidnappings, tribe expansions and shuffles. Voting advantages and disadvantages, and in the first season, Panama introduced a Deadman’s Island where contestants voted out after the merge was isolated from the game until an opportunity to return arose.
